Silver is always weighed in troy ounces, not the standard avoirdupois ounces used for everyday items. This is an important distinction:
A kitchen scale that reads in grams is the most reliable way to weigh your silver. You can then enter that gram weight above and let the calculator convert it to troy ounces.
A digital kitchen scale that reads in grams is sufficient for most items. For more precise results, a jewelry scale that reads to 0.1g is ideal. Weigh pieces without their storage chest or velvet inserts.
Most silver flatware pieces range from 50–150g each; a full 12-place service can exceed 2,000g.
Important — Knives & Stainless Handles
Do not include flatware knives or serving pieces with stainless steel blades or handles when estimating your set's silver weight. The handles of sterling knives are typically hollow and filled with cement — they contain very little silver relative to their weight. Weigh these pieces separately and note them when you contact us.
